Is Twitch Growth Easier for Women?

We’ve all heard someone say it at some point—women have it easier on Twitch. The idea is that twitch growth is easier for women. But is it true? No, it’s not, but read on.

The evidence doesn’t support the claim

Take a look at the top streamers on Twitch. Spoiler alert: it’s a sausage-fest up there. There are very few women who are holding a viewership in the five-digit range. You’ll see streamers like Summit1G, Dr. Disrespect, and Tfue holding massive viewerships. The closer you get to the top of Twitch the fewer women show up.

Women grow faster on Twitch

Women do tend to get follows faster than men on Twitch. If you look at this factor alone, you might think Twitch growth is easier for women. But are follows a good measure of growth? According to the Online Performance Group, they found that a follow for a male streamer was four times as likely to become a regular of the channel than for a female. In a 60 day period, the top 2500 male streamers gained an average concurrent viewership of 20, while women in that group gained 2.

Women are still fighting video game stigmas

Video game discrimination is a real thing. Women are still viewed by a lot of dumb people as not being as good at gaming. Seeing as Twitch and other streaming services consist of mostly gaming footage, this can make for a challenging landscape. They are judged for their physical appearance at a higher rate and consequently have to deal with more Internet trolls.

Twitch growth is not easier for women

So next time you think that women have it easier on Twitch, think again. Treat women like they belong, because they do! Having a diverse community makes the platform a better place for all of us. And hey, you might actually learn how to talk to women!
